Host Saskatoon Stuns Halifax 5-2 Sunday

Dallas Stars prospect Matej Stransky(above) had 2 goals Andrey Makarov stopped 29 of 31 shots, as the Saskatoon Blades won the first game for the WHL at the tournament 5-2 Sunday night.

Far from the offensive outburst they showed against the Hawks the night before, Halifax struggled against Makarov and the Blades, not scoring until 6:48 into the 3rd period.

Saskatoon scored 1 in the first and 1 in the second, on their way to a 4-0 3rd period lead. After Stephen MacAulay and Nathan Mackinnon scored to cut their lead to 2, with 11:41 left in the game, Halifax was pushing. This proved to be too little too late, because Josh Nicholls scored a empty netter with 2 seconds left, to put it away. This was Nicholls' 3rd of the tournament in 2 games.

The Blades went 1/6 on the power play and are now 1/8 in the tournament. Halifax went 0/5 and is now 2/11 in the tournament. Haifax Goalie Zachary Fucale stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced.

Saskatoon carries a 1-1 record into what is sure to be a huge game for both team, when they face Portland on Wednesday night. Halifax now is also 1-1 and faces London on Tuesday night.
