Thursday's Winterhawks' News and Notes: Glass and Canada Red in Semis

Cody Glass and Team Canada Red Advance:
-Portland's 16-year-old rookie center and Team Canada Red scored three time in the third period and advanced to the semi-finals of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. They beat Team Canada Black 3-2 on Thursday afternoon. Canada Red got the game winning goal with under three minutes to play from Moose Jaw Warriors' defenseman Josh Brook and held on tight for the win. They are undefeated in the tournament so far but have now played two nail biters in a row. Canada Red next faces Russia on Friday.
Reedy

Reedy and the U.S. Fall Short:
-Meanwhile, Winterhawks' prospect Scott Reedy (committed to the University of Minnesota) and the U.S. U-17 team fell to Sweden 5-4. The U.S. was victimized by Sweden's power play which went 2/4 in the game. Reedy was pointless in the game, but has seven in the tourney so far. The U.S. will now play in the seventh place game tomorrow.

Trades Galore in the WHL:
-There have been so many trades recently, that I had to look at the Calendar and verify that it wasn't January. Here's a breakdown of the dealings over the last couple of days:
Nick McBride was sent from Prince Albert to Prince George for a second round pick (2017)
-McBride reportedly requested a trade before the season started and had to wait over a month before it was completed. The Cougars acquire a former second round bantam pick who was ranked number seven among North American goalies, but was not drafted last June. McBride joins Ty Edmonds and Mack Shields as goalies on the Cougar's roster. Both Edmonds and Shields have played well in spots, which makes this acquisition somewhat puzzling for the Cougars.
Spokane Deals Luke Harrison to Brandon for an 11th Round Pick
-The Chiefs get an 11th round pick, so essentially nothing for Harrison, who they had to deal as they had four 20-year-olds after Adam Helewka came back to the team. The Chiefs acquired Harrison off of waivers from Kamloops just three weeks ago. This means that Harrison is on his third team in three weeks. I would like to say that this is an anomaly. but unfortunately this seems to be a regular thing for at least one over-ager every season, due to the three 20-year-old restriction.
Giants Trade for Wapple, then Deal Lee
Wapple

-Something needed to change in Vancouver and  the Giants decided that this time it was their goalie. They dealt their long-time goalie Payton Lee to Edmonton for a sixth round pick in 2016, while bringing in Daniel Wapple from Regina for a fourth round 2017 pick. The Giants are in the middle of a tailspin and could use a major change. Head coach Lorne Molleken hopes that this and the deals they swung last week do the trick.

Notable WHL Scores:
Wednesday:
-Calgary's defensemen have been great this year but last night is a night one of them will want to forget. Radel Fazleev was controlling the puck in his own zone with seconds left in regulation, directly after Reid Gardiner had just tied the game at two. Fazleev fanned not once but twice on a pass out of his own zone and Gardiner pounced on the gift, winning the game 3-2 in regulation for Prince Albert.
-Seattle dropped their third straight on their Alberta swing to Edmonton. Particularly embarrassing for the T-birds is the fact that the Oil Kings  had only won one of their last eight games coming in. Edmonton was led to the 4-2 win by two goals from Brandon Baddock.
-Victoria ran their win streak to four games, beating Moose Jaw on the road 5-2. More impressive then the five goals to me, was holding the Brayden Point, Brett Howden and Dryden Hunt led Warriors to only two goals. Dante Hannoun had two goals for the Royals in the win.
Winterhawks in the NHL:
Wednesday:
-Jannik Hansen scored his third of the year to narrow Vancouver's deficit to Pittsburgh to 3-2, but the Canucks would not get any closer. The goal was Hansen's third of the year.
Thursday:
-Braydon Coburn notched his third assist of the year and Tampa Bay ousted Buffalo 3-1.
-Matt Dumba bombed in his second goal of the season, but the Minnesota Wild fell to Seth Jones, Paul Gasutad and the Nashville Predators 3-2.
-Another greasy goal for Cody McLeod as he scored his second of the year off of a rebound and Colorado fell to Arizona 4-2.
-Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist for two points in a 3-2 Columbus win over L.A. Dubinsky now has 10 points this year, which leads the Blue Jackets.
Winterhawks in the AHL:
Wednesday:
-Brendan Leipsic notched another assist and the Toronto Marlies kept on rolling, beating Hartford 5-0.
Pouliot
-Derrick Pouliot was scratched  for Wilkes Barre/Scranton in a 5-2 win over St. John's due to an injury. It is now being reported that Pouliot was also arrested early Sunday morning for public drunkenness. There is not a lot known about the incident at this point but I think it's fair to say that Pouliot is on thin ice with the Penguins management. He was expected to have a breakout season in Pittsburgh, but a poor preseason sent him down to the AHL. This latest news definitely will not help his situation.
Winterhawks in the ECHL:
Wednesday:
-Mac Carruth stopped all 22 shots he faced and he and the Indy Fuel beat former teammate Troy Rutkowski and Evansville 3-0. The shutout was Carruth's first of the season.
-Thomas Frazee had an assist and now has points in six of seven games for Atlanta this season. They beat Idaho 5-4, despite Taylor Peters' goal and an assist.
